Hon Kit is a founder and director of Wynk Collaborative, a Singapore-based design studio established in 2011, whose work is centered around spatial design.
What is Design?
Design is function and aesthetics.
Breaking down the definition of Design:
Design is a way of thinking, a service, communication, anthropology, cultural creation.
Always think about what you are designing, and who are you designing for.
Think of Design as Venn Diagrams. There are many grey areas when designing.
Thus, Design is all about finding the grey areas and intersections. This allows us to find ways to create something new, making projects more interesting.
Look beyond "design." Be open to new ideas and information. Find your interests and understand why you like and don’t like.
Retail space is about retail. Retail space is not about retail.
How do we build a community in a retail space?
Case Study: GINLEE Studio @ Great World City
Client doesn’t want a straightforward shop whereby customers just directly buy products in display.
Wants to prevent wastage by making outfits when order is confirmed.
Created a waiting lobby for social interactions that can be seen from the outside.
Case Study: Habitat by Honestbee
Trying to minimise transactional spaces by inserting social components to retail (libraries, etc.)
Intentions do not always translate into results.
Love, Bonito at Funan
Realised that barely any customers engage in several touch-points such as membership kiosk after setting up.
Took back a lot of the previous engagement touch-points that is used in Funan store for Vivocity and Ion outlets.
Every project is a prototype.
Although their touch-points did not produce the results that he wanted, he took it as a learning experience instead of seeing these as a failure. I find his viewpoint inspiring as it is crucial to reflect and learn from our mistakes and past experiences so that we can improve further.
